Blur the background of a photo

Add a photo and the background is blurred while the subject stays sharp, the look of a portrait lens. Choose how strong the blur is; the subject's outline, hair included, is kept crisp and the blur never smears its colors.

About Blur Background

A background blur tool built on the same cutout as the background remover. The subject is found with an AI model and refined along its edges; the background is then blurred separately using only background pixels, and the gap behind the subject is filled with its surroundings. The result looks like portrait mode, at the photo's full resolution.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from blurring the whole photo?+

Only the background is blurred. The subject is cut out first, the background is blurred on its own and the sharp subject is placed back on top, so it stands out like in a photo taken with a fast lens.

Why is there no glow around the subject?+

The blur is computed from the background pixels only, so the subject's colors are never spread into it. Many simple blur tools leave a bright or dark halo around hair; this one does not.

Can I blur only part of the background?+

The whole background is blurred. If something should stay sharp, like an object held in the hand, paint over it with Restore in Clean up the edges.

Can I use it to hide things in the background?+

Yes. A strong blur makes faces, screens and text in the background unreadable, which is useful before sharing a photo.

Is my photo uploaded?+

No. The models run in your browser and the photo stays on your device.
